Causes of Obesity: Welcome

SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE AND UNHEALTHY DIET

Being very inactive every day is deemed as very bad for one's health because a person is then not burning any calories, but they are taking in calories. This creates an imbalance where no energy is being outputted, but a lot is being inputted. With no physical exercise, the body is not able to resist any insulin that the body has, and it allows for cells to store fat in the body, with ease.

An unhealthy diet is a large part of why people are obese as many people are addicted to sugar as it fills pleasures in the brain, similar to many drugs. Sugar is very addictive and it is put in almost all of our food products in order for people to be satisfied with the taste of their products. For example, a 12 oz Coca-Cola bottle has over 39 grams of sugar, and that is already over 78% of the daily intake of sugar, according to the Coca-Cola Company facts page. These drinks and product are also much cheaper than healthier foods which then makes poorer regions of cities or towns in the United States, have to rely on these cheap and unhealthy foods. This then causes many economically disadvantaged families to have a family lifestyle that revolves around unhealthy foods. Junk food now is seen everywhere with vending machines being placed almost at any public place, and many unhealthy foods and drinks are seen in restaurants, bars, and cafes. Many diets of Americans include foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates, which in turn makes insulin levels rise. The increased levels of insulin causes fat cells to store energy and not be able to use that energy. According to a study done in Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Isfahan, Iran, they took 486 Tehran women from the ages 40 to 60, and they fed them 3 diets: Healthy dietary pattern, Traditional dietary pattern, and Western dietary pattern. The scientists were attempting to find out whether or not dietary patterns were the cause of high insulin resistance and Metabolic Syndrome among women. It turns out from the study that the Western dietary pattern had overall the greatest opportunity for Metabolic Syndrome to occur. This study concludes by saying that dietary patterns do affect Insulin Resistance and odds of obtaining Metabolic Syndrome.

MARKETING

According to the film by Morgan Spurlock Super Size Me, McDonald's spent over $1.4 Billion on Direct Advertisement, and Pepsi had spent over $1 Billion on direct advertisements. The Five a Day Fruit and Vegetable Campaigns had only spent over $2 Million on Direct Advertisements. Many of these advertisements target children because children cannot make critical decisions on their own, and they can easily love the foods of many of these sugary companies because they are not aware about the effects of obesity, and they are entertained by the multitude of characters and colors that a product may have. They are also seen according to Super Size Me, in toys and action figures as many of these companies are sponsored by these fast foods or food companies that have foods that are high in sugar. Foods that are heavily processed are made in order to last quite long in shelves and they are quite delicious to the point where they promote consumers to eat more of their product, which then encourages to buy more of their product.

GENETICS, SLEEP DEPRIVATION, AND AGE

Typically when children have obese parents, then they are themselves likely to become obese, and this in turn then makes many children susceptible to it, as if they follow other factors that cause obesity, then it will be easy for them to fall under the condition of obesity. Obesity is not because of the lack of willpower, it is cause of a person's environment as genetics, family lifestyle, and many other environmental factors cause a person to become obese. It is not all on the person's fault but a person can still change their weight with a few life changing habits. In a study, scientists took 12 pairs of young adult males that are twins. They attempted to research the affects on different people on long periods of overeating, and which genotypes come into this overeating scenario.  The results show that there were a large range of weight gain after a 100 day period that the study took place, and they would over eat 84 of those 100 days, where they would eat 84,000 k cal per day. The range of weight gain was from 4.3 kg to 13.3 kg,with the average weight gain being 8.1 kg. It was seen that twins experienced similar weight gains and the scientists concluded that genetic factors are the cause of the similarity of weight gain between twins. Some genetic factors include whether or not this energy should be stored as fat or lean tissue. Sleep Deprivation is typically bad with focusing and concentrating on tasks, but it also may cause obesity as it can cause food cravings that are quite high in sugar and carbohydrates. Sleep also makes physical exercise much more difficult to do, and so people with sleep deprivation have less incentives or discipline to start exercising. Age surprisingly can also come into play as when a person gets older, that person's metabolism declines, which means it is much more difficult to discard the excess weight that the person has. As a person ages they also lose muscle mass, and that declines their physical exercise, which means they would need less calories in order to maintain their weight.
